One of the culinary downsides to living in Minnesota was the utter lack of yakiniku restaurants. Right at the tail end of our five years there one place did open up, but for 5 years we went without being able to satisfy our craving to go to a restaurant and cook Korean-style bbq over a hot grill. Since we’ve moved back I’ve been to a fair number of yakiniku places around town, but I’m not really one for the “all you can eat” scene. I made an exception this past weekend to visit Gen Korean BBQ House, which opened its first Hawaii location in Ala Moana.
Gen Korean BBQ House takes over the space formerly occupied by Tsukiji Fish Market. I found it mildly interesting that the restaurant is colorized in blue, which psychologically makes you feel less hungry; not a good color scheme for a business to choose for ala carte ordering but perfect for all-you-can-eat. The menu here is extensive featuring over two dozen different varieties of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood.
While you can’t expect to have a life-changing experience at an all-you-can-eat place that offers reasonable pricing ($15.99 lunch, $26.99 dinner), I thought that the meat quality here was better on average than what you’ll find at most other AYCE options around Honolulu.
One thing that did stand out to me was the level of service. We had servers constantly at our table asking us if we needed anything: more rice, meat, water, sides, etc. We had no problem keeping the grill full and cooking at full capacity.
Overall I enjoyed my experience at Gen Korean BBQ House. If you are interested in reading more details check out my article on Frolic Hawaii here.
